MCLA DownStreet Art 2019 – North Adams, MA

Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) is seeking artist submissions for MCLA DownStreet Art 2019. This Call is for artwork for Storefront Installations on Main Street in downtown North Adams, MA.

Since 2008, MCLA DownStreet Art (MCLA - DSA) has offered exhibition opportunities to established and emerging artists in unconventional spaces in downtown North Adams, MA.

About Us:

Every summer, MCLA – DownStreet Art creates a program of visual and performing art events including exhibitions, video screenings, performances and site-specific installations in downtown North Adams.

Our goal is to aid in the economic development of North Adams and encourage the dialogue between our community and the arts. Since its inception in 2008, over 175,000 visitors have experienced a DownStreet Art exhibition or event.

The Call:

We welcome proposals from artists living anywhere in the United States; however, priority review will be given to artists living and/or working within 60 miles of North Adams, MA.

MCLA DownStreet Art seeks proposals in all mediums including, but not limited to drawing, painting, graphic design, sculpture, installation, fiber, ceramics, digital media, video/projection mapping, and mixed-media.

Selected artists will create storefront/window installations in vacant and/or under-utilized storefronts in downtown North Adams. Please reference the attached diagrams for more detailed information on our available spaces and note any site preference as part of your application.

North Adams buildingsSelected artists will receive an honorarium of $500. No additional funds will be allocated for travel, materials, fabrication costs, installation, or de-installation costs associated with their proposals.

Installation Dates: June 21-26, 2019
Opening Celebration: June 27, 2019

De-Installation: October 7-14

Projects will be considered on loan from the artist for the duration of the MCLA DownStreet Art season (June 27, 2019 - October 6, 2019). Artwork not removed by October 15 will become the property of MCLA and may be disposed of if not retrieved. 

How to apply:

Make all submissions to here, which will include the following:
- A brief description of the proposed project including details of your material, physical, and spatial requirements; include any special equipment or technical needs.
- Artist Statement and CV or Resume.
- Upload a PDF containing up to ten (10) images with a diagrammed layout of the proposed exhibition.


A panel of 4-5 judges will review proposals. The panel will consider the overall concept, feasibility, aesthetics, and relationship to available storefront sites.
