Designed for new students who are declared STEM majors, or who have an interest in becoming a STEM major, the five-day program – now in its sixth year – will provide them with a preview of what the next four years might hold at MCLA.

The press will have an opportunity to visit a chemistry class and/or join students at a dinner and roundtable discussions with local STEM professionals.

WHEN:  Tuesday, July 31, 9:30 a.m. (chemistry class), and Wednesday, Aug. 1, 7 p.m. (roundtable).

WHERE:  Feigenbaum Center for Science & Innovation (CSI), in room 309 (chemistry class), or in the atrium (dinner/roundtable).

WHO:  Carolyn Dehner, Ph.D, director of the Berkshire Bank STEM Academy and an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at MCLA, participating students, and MCLA faculty:

Athletic Training – Peter Hoyt, Ph.D.

Biology – Anne Goodwin, Ph.D.

Chemistry – Rob Harris, Ph.D.

Environmental Studies – Dan Shustack, Ph.D.

Math – Chris Thomas, Ph.D.

Physics – Bridget Gormalley, Ph.D., and Kebra Ward , Ph.D.

According to Dehner, “STEM Academy is a well-rounded program that incorporates academics, peer mentoring, campus/local living, and career preparation. Incoming students build relationships with faculty, staff, fellow students, and local STEM professionals, which really boosts their confidence prior to arrival in the fall. This has lasting effects well into their college careers in terms of making the most of their time at MCLA and preparing them for the challenges that lie ahead.”
