MCLA TO SIGN ARTICULATION AGREEMENT WITH BCC

May 9, 2018
NORTH ADAMS, MASS. — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) this week will sign an articulation agreement with Berkshire Community College (BCC) that will allow students who have completed their associate’s degree in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) at BCC to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Sciences with a concentration in pre-physical therapy at MCLA.

The articulation agreement will be signed at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, in the Feigenbaum Center for Science and Innovation (CSI) room 124, on the MCLA campus.

According to Dr. Anne Goodwin, chair of MCLA’s biology department, this new agreement provides a clear path for qualified students to complete their bachelor’s degree in just two additional years, likely while they continue to work as physical therapist assistants.

“Berkshire Community College does an excellent job preparing its graduates for careers and for coursework at MCLA,” Goodwin said. “PTA students bring invaluable professional experience into our classrooms. Our curriculum in Health Sciences: Pre-Physical Therapy will prepare them for advanced study and future success as physical therapists.”

Articulation agreements such as this one are important, Goodwin said, because many career paths require a bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree for employment or professional advancement.

Berkshire Community College PTA Program Advisor Michele Darroch agrees, adding “At BCC, we pride ourselves in academic excellence. This agreement with MCLA only furthers that goal and we’re excited to have aligned with a school that shares our values and our mission for our PTA students – which is the graduation of caring and compassionate therapists with a focus on excellence.”

“We like to work closely with Berkshire Community College and other community colleges to facilitate the transition from associate’s degree programs to bachelor’s degree programs to ensure maximum transfer of courses and minimal time to degree completion,” Goodwin said. “The Physical Therapist Assistant-Health Sciences: Pre-Physical Therapy articulation agreement accomplishes this goal, and I look forward to welcoming additional PTA students into our department.”

MCLA already has an agreement with the Sage Colleges in Albany, N.Y., which facilitates the transition of Health Sciences: Pre-Physical Therapy graduates to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
