Senior combines marketing internship with love of theatre
Passionate about theatre, Zack Page ’16 dreams of becoming a professional actor. An arts management major with a minor in theatre, this summer he’s serving an internship in New Hampshire at The Barnstormers Theatre.
As a marketing intern for Barnstormers, Page works to promote the theatre company. In addition to proofreading press releases and other marketing materials, he researches other theatre companies in the area to compare numbers, distributes posters throughout the region, and promotes Barnstormers’ latest show each Saturday at a nearby farmer’s market.
“I also lend a hand when I can to my fellow interns that are working in the scene shop, lighting, and props. Basically, there’s always something to be done here as an intern at The Barnstormers!” he exclaimed.
This summer’s experience follows an internship he served last summer at Merrimack Repertory Theatre in his hometown of Lowell, Mass. Then, he assisted the director of marketing, the director of development, as well as the executive director.
“It was a great experience full of wonderful experiences, and I truly felt it prepared me to partake in an internship of this caliber” at Barnstormers, Page said.
Although he works long hours and free time is scarce, “I really enjoy being immersed in a world with people who love the same things I do,” he explained. “Everybody comes from different backgrounds and has different experiences, but we can bond over the fact that we all love theatre.”
Page prepared himself for this summer’s internship by taking an “Arts Marketing” course last fall. “That opened my eyes to the world of marketing for a theatre company.”
In addition, he served as part of the marketing team for a production of the Fine & Performing Arts Department, as well as for Harlequin’s spring production of “Carrie: The Musical.” He also performed in that show.
“I think the staff at Barnstormers was impressed with the fact that I have worked in both on- and off-stage positions, and the fact that marketing was my major focus as they were looking to improve their marketing department,” Page said.
In addition to becoming involved on campus by serving as the co-president of Harlequin Musical Theatre club and working as an admissions ambassador through the Office of Admission, Page was an admissions volunteer, a peer advisor to other students, and is a member of Yorick, MCLA’s Shakespeare theatre club.
“I have had a tremendous experience here at MCLA. The professors that I have had are exceptional and extremely talented at what they do,” he continued. “Arts management is an innovative, entertaining, and wonderful field to get involved in.”
The best parts of being an MCLA student, Page said, include getting involved, meeting great friends, and professors who are leaving lasting impressions on him.
“This college has allowed me to come out of my shell from shy freshman to outgoing senior,” he explained. “I have met lifelong friends, attend amazing events, and participated in immense opportunities I never thought would be possible. MCLA is a community of individuals that won’t judge you for your interests and will become a place you will long to get back to. For me, MCLA is my home-away-from-home, and I am so lucky to be a part of it all.”
