Alumna uses MBA to Grow Multi-Million Dollar Business

After working as a registered nurse for more than a decade, Bonnie Eichorn ’12 decided to make a change and, for next five years, ran the former Berkshire Home Care in Lee, Mass., before she realized that she wanted to run her own business.

“I decided to enroll in MCLA’s MBA program. I realized that being a nurse was great, but running a home health care agency as a registered nurse with an MBA was even better,” Eichorn explained.

With the skills and knowledge she gained from MCLA’s Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) program, Eichorn and her husband, Jeff Lee, built their private duty caregiver, home healthcare agency, Mountain View Home Healthcare, Inc.

In their sixth year of operating what is now a multi-million dollar business, “Each year has been more successful than the last,” Eichorn said.

Life did not stop when Eichorn went back to school: She worked between 30 and 40 hours a week as a school nurse while in the MBA program. In addition, she was newly married with three children at home.

“Everything was very doable. The homework was intense, but the teamwork of our cohort was really good. During the week we were able to communicate with professors,” she said. “It was challenging, but also very manageable. It was just great. I loved it.”

A good deal of what she learned at MCLA directly related to what she does today. Eichorn especially appreciates the financial aspect of the program – including her coursework in accounting – and what she learned about time management.”

Eichorn’s main goal was to be an entrepreneur. Today, in addition to three full-time office workers, she employs about 95 part-time, per diem caregiver employees, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, personal care assistants, homemakers and companions.

Mountain View Home Healthcare, Inc. provides services that include personal care, medication reminders, companionship, and up to 24-hour care.

“Our mission is to provide professional, quality service to Berkshire County residents in the comfort of their own home, so they can stay home if they prefer that option. It’s to help enhance their independence at home, and keep them safe,” Eichorn explained.

“Being a business owner comes with a lot of independence and responsibility,” she continued. “But, if it’s done properly, it comes with a wonderful lifestyle, and I’m so satisfied that I’m helping people in this community live their lives.”

Eichorn encourages others who work in business to get an MBA.

“An MBA is of great value. It opens up doors in many areas. In my field, it helped me to understand how to run a business. It gave me a lot of credibility, and the professors were excellent. It was an incredible investment. MCLA has a wonderful program, and it’s also very affordable,” she said.

“I never would have dreamed that I could have done something in business that I love to do every day and do it with confidence, because I have the MBA,” Eichorn added. “I love being able to say I have an MBA. It makes a difference.”
