Building Evacuation

If you hear a building alarm or are instructed to evacuate by a college official:

                  - Do not panic but do not ignore the alarm or request.
Leave the building immediately in an orderly fashion. Classes, meetings, or events
must be dismissed for evacuation. Do not take time to gather personal items.
- If you are the last person leaving a room close the door behind you; do not lock it.
- Follow the quickest evacuation route to the nearest marked exit. (See posted evacuation
plans located near exits.) Be familiar with alternate routes and exits.

- Do not use elevators. If you are unable to use stairs or need assistance exiting, see these instructions.
- Proceed to the nearest evacuation assembly point (EAP) for your building. If the designated
EAP is unsafe or blocked, proceed to an alternate assembly point via the quickest
                     and safest route.

- Stay at the EAP until emergency personnel state that you can leave. Do not return
to your classroom or office for any reason until emergency personnel say it is safe
                     to go.

- Report any knowledge regarding missing people or people still in the building to emergency
                     personnel.

                  - Ask for assistance from others leaving the building, if possible.
- If that's not possible, proceed to the nearest designated "safe room/area" as shown
in posted evacuation plans, or remain in the office or classroom if it is safe to
                     do so.

                        - If you are on a floor WITHOUT exit doorways and you hear a fire alarm or are ordered
                           to evacuate:
Call Campus Police immediately (campus phones ext. 5100 or 911; other phones 413.662.5100
                           or 911).
- Tell them you need immediate assistance evacuating. Give your exact location (building
name, floor, room number, stairwell, etc.), and the number of the phone you're using.

- Remain by the phone in case responders need more information to reach you.
