Arts Management in the Field

MCLA's Arts Management program isn't just a program of study, it's an active participant in one of the country's most vibrant arts districts. The Berkshires were identified as the top most vibrant arts region of our size in 2017 and MCLA's arts management students and faculty work throughout the county on in-class case studies, as interns, on the boards of cultural organizations and with regional projects.

How MCLA Makes Art Work

  • The Berkshire Hills Internship Program:  The Berkshire Hills Internship Program (BHIP) is an intensive arts management internship program that offers students educational and career advancement opportunities through hands-on work experience at cultural sites in the Berkshires.
  • Sm[ART]Commons: Sm[ART]Commons is run by MCLA arts management students featuring interviews, reviews, articles and resources for current and prospective students, alumni, and the surrounding community. Students have conducted interview profiles on professionals in the field, alumni and students providing a platform for students to investigate the field of arts and culture.
  • MCLA's Berkshire Cultural Resource Center: The BCRC is a collaborative project of MCLA, MASS MoCA and the City of North Adams. It provides opportunities, resources, and support bringing together the Northern Berkshires, MCLA and greater Creative Communities through its cultural programming.
  • MCLA's Gallery 51: Since 2005, Gallery 51 has anchored BCRC operations on Main Street.  Exhibiting work from a wide range of emerging to mid-career contemporary artists to the greater Berkshire community. The gallery hosts ten exhibitions each year and countless events and happenings. Staffed by mostly student workers, MCLA Gallery 51 provides students with hands-on experience in the day-to-day operations of a gallery.
  • DownStreet Art:  Each summer from late June till the end of September, DSA creates a wide program of visual and performing arts events including exhibitions, video screenings and site-specific installations in downtown North Adams. DSA exists to build economic and social capital and encourage the dialogue between our community and the arts. DSA does this by enlivening downtown North Adams using art and cultural activities to increase visitorship and enhance resident participation.
