AN ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR
Peter Schumann and the Bread & Puppet Theater
Featuring a Post-Screening Q+A with filmmaker Robbie Leppzer
Friday, Dec. 4, 2026, at 6 p.m. FREE

AN ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR is a vibrant portrait of Peter Schumann, the visionary founder of the Bread & Puppet Theater, whose six decades of radical political performance have been forged from a single, searing childhood question: how do we as humans respond to the madness of war and violence?

AN ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR chronicles Peter Schumann's use of paintings, puppets and theater productions to protest war from the Vietnam War in the 1960s to the current genocide in Gaza.

Drawing on original footage and a remarkable archive spanning 60 years, film director Robbie Leppzer offers an intimate window into the man, his art, and his unbroken faith that creativity can stand against the brutality of power.

In an age desperate for hopeful figures of cultural resistance, this new film is a testament to the radical, enduring idea that art is not a retreat from the world; it is a way of fighting for it.

This screening is part of "The Art of Resistance," a two-month exhibit at Gallery 51 through Dec. 11, sponsored by Greylock Together.

“Filmmaker Robbie Leppzer is the master chronicler of contemporary movements of protest and social change. His latest work, AN ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR, is beautifully filmed and immaculately edited with deeply evocative music. This is filmmaking of the very first order.”

Exhibition Information:

Greylock Together, a grassroots Indivisible group serving Northern Berkshire County, advances democratic values through collective action and community organizing. Since 2016, the organization has worked on a wide range of pro-democracy initiatives in the local community, many of which have incorporated creative expression. This exhibit showcases some of that work through a collection of protest posters, puppets, video art, installations and other original pieces submitted by members and supporters.
